Amount of Office Space per Employee Decreases

New research released today indicates that the amount of office space per employee is set to drop to as low as 100 sq. ft. per employee for many companies within the next five years.

The results of the survey, performed by CoreNet Global, the worldwide association for corporate real estate and workplace professionals, indicated that by 2017 many companies across North America will reach this all-time low benchmark of individual office space utilization.

The average for all companies for square feet per employee in 2017 will be 151 square feet, compared to 176 square feet today, and 225 square feet in 2010.

This decline in office space allocation per employee is the result of companies opting for "smaller and smarter" workplaces due to the continuing economic uncertainty and rising office rents. More and more companies are also opting for open plan offices with unassigned workspaces, particularly for those staff who work out of the office a lot, allowing for cost measures and the ability to maximize on office space.
