Clearing out your office before you move is one of those tasks we all put off until the last minute, and many companies don't even bother to do it at all. Office clutter needs to go before you move into your new office, as it can hamper your productivity and damage your professional image.
Setting time aside to have a good clear up before you relocate will save you money: not only by avoiding moving unwanted items to the new office (which costs more), but you'll also be able to free up some valuable space in the new facility by taking less with you.
Here are some tips to help you tackle an office clear out project effectively:
Make clearing out your office a team effort!
The mere thought of an office clear out can be overwhelming. It's a whole lot easier (and quicker) to get all your staff involved in the process. You don't have to do the whole clear out at once, as this may interfere with work commitments. Set aside one or two hours each day for a week to help you get through the process.
Recycle what you can
As you organize and declutter your office, recycle any old papers that you no longer need. If you need to keep files and paper for longer periods but they are not necessarily 'active' files, ask your Office Moving Company if they provide archiving facilities. This will help free up valuable office space and avoid your new office looking too cluttered.
If you are clearing out any redundant IT equipment, make sure this doesn't just go in the garbage. You can either donate this to a charity, or recycle it responsibly. Ask your IT Relocation Company if they provide this service. Many can take this laborious task off your hands.
Setting policies in the new Office
Start as you mean to go on in your new office, and set up some new policies that will enable you to keep on top of your clutter and give your new office a professional and clean image. Establish a clear desk policy where everyone has to leave their desks clear of any papers or cups at the end of each day. You'll be surprised just how much better your office looks, and operates when the decks are cleared!
