As an employer, you are required to inform your staff about the office relocation as early as possible. Announcing your office move early to staff will make them feel a valued part of your future business vision, and also dispel any negative rumors if staff happen to hear about the move from another source. Staff are at the heart of any business and need to be treated as such.
As part of the initial consultation you need to give as much information as possible to your employees; including reasons for the move, new office specification and location, timing and how they will be personally affected. Give staff opportunity to ask questions and aire their concerns.
It is important to reassure staff over seemingly trivial matters (such as where they might get their lunch) and how their commute to and from work might be affected. Matters such as who they will be sitting next to in the new office is also important, and as your new space plan is agreed - this is certainly something to be shared amongst your staff.
The key is to retain your staff and keep them motivated throughout the process - even though an office relocation can be an unsettling time, with clear communication and enough information the move can be a happy and successful experience for everyone involved.
